CHARNEY HALL Grange Hotels

At half term many parents of Charney boys stayed at one of the magnificent Grange hotels.
Traditionally furnished with thick fitted woollen carpets, and in the Autumn and Spring terms, having log fires in massive fireplaces fuelled with silver birch logs, and often surrounded by landscaped gardens, they were at their best in the 1950s. This was a time when silver service was de rigueur.
Below are listed some of the well known establishments. Some still survive today but of necessity have had to cut back on the standard of service and maintenance that existed 60 years ago.

I remember well the Grange and Netherwood during their early '50's heyday. Most long distance parents stayed there and in warm weather congregated outside late afternoon for gin and It and lots of chat and sometimes scandal. We boys learned to play supervised billiards, and ping pong. They were grand and spendid establishments. My parents rarely came from the the Isle of Man for half term due distance, and orphaned boys as they were called stayed at the school ( somewhat depressing.)There were some very kind and generous mothers who rounded up the orphans and took them out with thir own family, sometimes much to the chagrin of their own son who had not been wanting, or expecting to spend half term with an orphan...
