CHARNEY HALL Cricket in the 1930s

Updated : 26 March 2022

Enormous thanks go to John Cranna who sourced this amazing, possibly unique, piece of Charney history, - a parents’ cricket match most probably in the 1930s, taken with a cine camera by Hilda Edmondson.

The boys haven’t changed much, even the cricket colours cap was the same. But the parents are showing their age with a silver fox fur in evidence, and brimmed, cloche style, summer hats, tailored suits and homburgs being de rigueur!

Afternoon tea looks as though it was served on the tennis court which was in close proximity to the school kitchen.

I include John Cranna’s informative comments here:

The following are some screen shots from the film which set the scene:

The video came from a FB group called Charney Hall, created by Peter William in 2017 and there are three in the group, me, him and Nigel Pemberton. This is the text that went with the video: "1932 Summer half term cricket match at Charney Hall School. Filmed by Hilda Marjorie Edmondson whose son Paul was playing in the match. Paul Edmondson was a pupil at the school from 1928 until 1934. His father, Thomas Edmondson, is seen chatting to an unknown man at the end of the tea sequence. Thomas is the man on the right. Thomas and Hilda spent most of their time in India while Paul was at school. Thomas was Architect to the Governor of Bengal. I have no knowledge of Paul Edmondson after he left Charney Hall. If anybody has any information about him, school documents, photos, magazine etc, I would be very grateful.
Thank you."

More info from Peter William "The story of the film clip is that I discovered it among a collection of home movies shot by Hilda Marjorie Edmondson. After many hours of research I managed to piece together a lot of information about the family. Eventually I shall get to complete a documentary about them using the discovered footage. There's a little bit more about them on my website https://www.zamindarfilms.eu The films were shot between about 1928 and 1939."
