Post updated 7 October 2022 with inclusion of School Admissions for 1884 Actually 1882-87) included in David Clapp’s ‘The First 50 Years of Charney Hall’ - a very informative publication. This document was obtained from Cumbria (Barrow) Archive Centre.

Post updated 29 April 2024 with addition of Autumn 1948 School List from CH Notes 1948 donated with thanks by David Paul (Tilak).

Post updated 23 June 2024 with additions of years Autumn 1946,1947,1950,1951,1952,1953
- a valuable and much appreciated donation by John Ogden, scanned and supplied by David Paul (Tilak). This also includes scanning the CH Notes for the above dates which will be published in due course. Many thanks John and Tilak!

I believe that the archived volumes, now lodged in Barrow Record Office, were originally the property of the School and its headmaster, Maxwell Duncan. It is regretted that other items were not donated to the Record Office upon closure of the school, particularly all the photographs of past pupils which were arranged along the dado rails in the Dining Room.

My apologies for the quality of the images of school lists taken at the Record Office. The Archive Centre does not allow photocopying/scanning of their collection. Photographing books without any restraint of the pages except with fingers and thumb, without proper balanced lighting and holding the camera with one outstretched hand is well nigh impossible!!  The only condition that the Centre makes is that any material obtained or photographed is credited to the Barrow Record Office which I have faithfully adhered to in this blog. A reference to Charney Hall Blogspot has been included in the school’s archive as a resource of information.

Look forward to seeing very shortly the earliest Charney Hall Notes of 1890 (only 3 pages!), many more years in between and some very good, sometimes amusing, reporting of school matches by Maxwell Duncan. Perhaps someone will spot a boy who became very famous, or maybe just infamous….?

I have to admit that I chose a Notes edition (see in a future post) when I featured strongly both in football and the minor sport of running. I am astounded to report that at some point, I was actually captain of the Under Eleven XI football team, played centre forward and centre half - I thought that, being left-footed and an incredibly fast runner that I had always played on the left wing! That illustrates how memory can play bad tricks! John Eaton, Stephen Halstead and many others that I remember fondly are also mentioned albeit far, far too many times! Especially John (Nutty), he also features prominently on the 1952? School Photograph (Charney Hall School/Year Team Photographs) intriguingly centre stage, immediately behind Messrs Duncan and Hirst….perhaps printing costs or a new oak spectators’ bench were mentioned…...?

I have listed the original census forms in a separate post for the sake of clarity.

In the 1939 Register one A B K McCullough is a pupil at Charney Hall and the schoolmaster resident in The Lodge is Mr James H I Hopkins - more about him later.

On the Spring Term 1971 list, the unknown between Howson and Mackintosh is Jevon. I think he was Jevon mi., though presumably his brother had left by then.

I have a list from 1970, I think, which I could probably scan or photograph and send in if someone tells me how to send it.

There are various Coverdales listed in the early 1960s, one of whom (I forget his Christian name, assuming I ever knew it) came back as a master towards the end of my time at the school (early 1970s.) I don't remember what he taught, other than that he gave a few of us poker lessons in the library.

Hi Richard,
If you can scan the year list and send it to me at hkeithsmith@gmail.com I will be pleased to include it in this post.
Alternatively if you are not able to do this We could make other arrangements. Many thanks for you contribution to the Charney Hall site.
Best wishes, Keith Smith

Richard, re your note about Coverdales, during my last term, Autumn 1963, there were 2 Coverdales, 1 of whom I vaguely recall, but only because on one of my business trips to Scotland (from Leeds), I stopped off at Charney, and Coverdale was, as you said, a master at that time. No recollection of year, though! In that List, I was Wilson minor, having previously been minimus/tertius(!), but have no memory of any other Wilson!
