On the first page of the 1960 edition of Charney Hall Notes published in the November of that year, Maxwell Duncan announced the retirement of Raymond Hirst, the joint headmaster since April 1937.

Here is the article, headed with a photo of JRH, kindly supplied by Alison Lebègue, his granddaughter.

Post updated March 14 2022 - more photographs added Post updated March 6 2024 - Photo 18 - Football XI 1966 or 67? added Post updated May 8 2024 - Year 1896/7 added Post updated Jan 9 2025 - Photo 18 Title amended, comment added  Recently sourced from the excellent article about the Podmore family by David Clapp with the assistance of Frances Limbrey in June 2015, published by the Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society*, this is probably the first Charney Hall School Year photograph in existence. Taken around 1896 it features George and Matilda Podmore, their daughter Enid, two of their sons Eric and Hubert, together with 22 pupils. The School Lists indicate the intake for 1896 to be 27 boys whereas 24 boys are scheduled in 1897 (This would include the Podmore’s 2 sons) and may therefore be the correct year.  *  https://cplhs.wordpress.com/wp-content/u...
