Funny Keith that you covered the two old boys that cropped up in my Notes scanning. Have you mentioned Gort who would have commended the Army at El Alamein if he hadnt been shot down in a plane? His name is on plaque that's in St Peter's church.

Coming sööön John! - just watching The World at War, swatting up on the desert campaigns - not a mention of Gott. If he had survived we would never have heard about Montgomery. Once attended a lecture at public school where Monty appeared.
His statement ‘…it was a good map…I drew it …’ will forever remain in my memory. A very arrogant man indeed.

I don't know if more was discovered about Gort's connection if any to CH, or Grange, but the stepson of the man who became the 8th Viscount Gort in 1975 came to CH I believe in September 1950 at the same time as myself. Jarand(Mac)was a childhood friend in the Isle of Man - our parents knew each other, and was at CH for 2 or 3 years.I lost touch over the years, but spent one summer in the '50 s at Lough Cutra, in Galway at the family castle . I went to CH because my father and Duncan had been together at Pembroke College, Oxford, hence he was trusted not to do me too much harm.....Hirst had gone to Rugby where I went, assisted by his connections.

Maybe incorrect about Rugby - but he had some connection there.
