Charney Hall Environs

This section of Ordnance Survey map shows the school before the Memorial Hall was built. The hall was completed by 1924.

At this point in time Charney Road which runs down the eastern boundary, appears as a track.

The woods shown as 552/553 were subsequently cleared and the whole field graded in two sections to form 2 football pitches.

The Lodge, built in 1928, between the School House and Grove House, was an annex but was also reserved as a sanatorium in the event of an epidemic.

To the north east of the main site, Grove House, the original school purchased by George and Matilda Podmore, was re-acquired by the School sometime after 1958.

The area of additional land acquired in the mid 1950s is shown outlined in blue. The boys were employed to demolish the random coursed limestone wall to open up the newly acquired extension to the cricket field.

Was this the first and last use of unpaid labour in the school’s history? Think about it - parents paying school fees for pupils to remove a field wall! An exemplary example of good business sense worthy of Dragons Den!

In 1963 latent pupil-power was again employed in the School’s next major project - that of the new swimming pool…ref Charney Hall Swimming Pool.

Detail from Airviews photograph (mid 1950s) which shows the Cricket Field Extension cleared and graded but still fenced off.

* Grove House: A record held at the Barrow Archive Centre, Cumbria County Council, confirms that repairs and alterations were carried out commencing on 30th December 1957. The specification dated November 1957 was prepared by Architects Jennings and Gill L/ARIBA, Market Place, Ambleside and the building work carried out by Dawson Contractor of Ulverston (Job No. 2211)
