CHARNEY HALL From Afar

Rev : KS colour photo of Lake District National Park added - Jan 2024

The colour photograph (above) illustrates how close the Lake District was to Grange-over-Sands and Charney Hall. We were indeed fortunate as senior boys to be able to spend time there at the weekends and experience the magnificence of the landscape of one of Britain’s National Parks. At our impressionable age these forays into the unknown would stay with us for the rest of our lives and for some who made the North West their home, regular excursions would become part of the respite from an increasingly hectic life.
If you screw your eyes up really tight, you may be able to make out the former site of Charney Hall in the magical views over Morecambe Bay….😆

One distinct memory of school days is walking along the bay front at high tide with the water lapping against the bay walls. Revisiting Grange in the 90s it was interesting to see that I suspect due to the shifting sands that the Bank water has shifted away so that there is a permanent area of tufty grass between the promenade walk and the bay even at high tide.

Love these pictures Keith. I especially like the Black and White ones. Ansel Adams looks like he is getting a rival to equal him Keith ! Tilak

These lovely photographs are most evocative. Such a shame that the noble school building no longer stands. One of the most memorable views for me was that from the school dining room, with the evening orange lights of Morecambe twinkling seductively across the bay. On one such evening I escaped from staff duties to see Johnny and The Hurricanes at Morecambe's Winter Gardens. Top venue !

Hi Chris,
You have certainly stirred up the blog this month which has had over 600 hits so far.

Since I first started the Charney Hall Blog we have had over 17K views which isn’t bad for a school that no longer exists! However there is a college in USA which has a similar name so maybe Google has confused things and recorded unintended hits!

I have recently been in touch with the editor of Grange Now and put in a request for any photos readers may have of the school’s demolition. I asked the Westmorland Gazette over a year ago but unfortunately received no reply…somebody, somewhere must have some!

I have thought that it would be of interest, and important for posterity, to receive brief details about Messrs Duncan and Hirst’s family life and to include some informal photos (to portray the other side of their characters which boys rarely if ever saw) but regretfully both families have not indicated their willingness to participate.
My intended post about General Gott who was shot down (with others) on his way back to North Africa is long overdue. Time flies!
