Recently sourced from the excellent article about the Podmore family by David Clapp with the assistance of Frances Limbrey in June 2015, published by the Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society*, this is probably the first Charney Hall School Year photograph in existence. Taken around 1896 it features George and Matilda Podmore, their daughter Enid, two of their sons Eric and Hubert, together with 22 pupils. The School Lists indicate the intake for 1896 to be 27 boys whereas 24 boys are scheduled in 1897 (This would include the Podmore’s 2 sons) and may therefore be the correct year.

19 June 2020 : I’m very pleased to post more school photographs kindly supplied by Stephen (1954-1959) and Anthony (1957-1962) Halstead. Stephen’s memory is phenomenal and with his assistance and the use of a copy of 1959/60 Charney Hall Notes we have managed to put the majority of names, initials and dates to the cricket teams. I have digitised, repaired, de-spotted and improved them as far as possible.

Many thanks to Sven Thome for providing the above photograph 18.
Jan 9 2025 : Here is a comment received from Simon Keirby (1965-68) concerning photo 18. In view of his comments I have amended the team/date. Thank you Simon. KS
‘I did note that one of the photographs from Sven Thome was of the football team from 1966/67.Photo 18. Sven was in the football team of 1966, but the photograph according to my record of it was the Rugby Team 1968. The record for that team was unbeaten  against Cressbrook, Lawrence House and Earnseat. We scored 10 tries against Cressbrook. I am in the middle row just in front of Sven and to his right.’

I'm second row down, and far left. I have two other school photos, probably 1966 and 1968. And a 1970 cricket team photo.

The last photos you have of school and cricket team with 1971? - you can remove the question mark as they are definitely 1971!!

Morning Everyone. This is a wonderful picture of the 1970 Cricket Team which John has supplied to Keith to upload to the Blog. I cannot get over John's great memory! The "gentle giant" Lyons was immensely tall indeed and also had a younger brother. I always remember the Elder Lyons was a kind of Prefect and decided to visit the younger boys in the large Dormitory in the main school building after lights out when you were not supposed to. Maxwell Duncan decided to pay a visit to the Dormitory and the Elder Lyons hid under a bed until Maxwell Duncan had left! The boy just behind Lyons I think was called Whitehead and had a younger brother too and when the 1st XI teams used to visit other Prep Schools we used to I think visit their Parents house for lunch or perhaps I am getting it mixed up with another Boy called Green! The boy standing next to John from memory was Andrew Hood who supported Arsenal! I recall this as one day he turned up on the training pitch wearing the Arsenal Strip. I recollect his Parents owned a Hotel in Morecambe or Blackpool called Bayview. The boy sitting in front of John was I recall called Porter and he was very tall too so the photographer appears to have got the juxtaposition just right by having the two tallest boys at the ends of the front row Tilak

1959 School Photo. Miss Kingdom was an English teacher. Seated next to her is the assistant matron, Miss Ward. She was based in the Lodge.

In the 1967 picture is the master named as Mr Hopkins actually Mr Hopkins? The Richard Hopkins I knew (who taught French and I think Geography) wasn't there in 1967. I started in 1968 and he arrived after me. But maybe there was another Mr Hopkins....?

Regarding the 1970 cricket team photo, the "Lyons" is I think actually Lyon (a Banks Lyon from Lancaster, I think Rodney) whose younger brother Simon was more or less my contemporary. There were also two brothers Lyons, who appear in one or two of the other photographs.
